Teenage Safety Precautions
Today’s world is not a safe place for teenagers who are filled with curiosity and adventure. Unfortunately, there are people who take advantage of the carefree attitudes of teenagers and hope to prey on innocent teenagers possibly even to their demise.
Our hope is that teenagers will read this and that parents will reinforce the Golden Rule: Never put yourself in precarious places alone, and stay with others to insure everyone’s safety.
Use the “buddy system” – walking to school, to and from a movie or any event- never go alone.
Be aware of strangers who may be following you and your friends.
Always have a cell phone available to call for help.
Keep your parents informed of where you are going. They are not the enemy!
Don’t take shortcuts through alleys, behind buildings or in dark unlighted areas.
Don’t talk to people who are strangers to you, especially if they are requesting help from you. Adults can get adult help.
Have a secret code with your family so as to never be confused that they would send someone you don’t know well to pick you up.
If you are planning to stay over night at a friend’s house, be sure that your parents approve and know who will be there during your stay.
Realize that alcohol and drug use have long lasting effects, and one bad decision can alter your life forever.
Don’t get into cars with people you don’t know and trust, or who may be using drugs or alcohol.
Use the Internet and social sites with caution! Meeting strangers on the Internet or on dating sites might put you in contact with someone who has a completely different plan than friendship.
Help is always available. The local police department, a teacher, or even a hospital are places you can get help if you are unsure of sharing with your parents or are in immediate danger.
Never participate in group cruelty to another person. Remember to respect others just like you would like to be respected.
These are just a few dangers that can lead to more dangerous situations. Youth is a time to enjoy life and experience meeting new friends who have good values. Be aware that there are many pitfalls in life, so keep your direction clear, and keep talking to your parents. They really do want the best for you.
